British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several access tunnels providing entry to the facility... early reports are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of British forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among thousands of British personnel stationed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our safety, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military executed what it termed a "massive strike" on IS targets in the country, following an assault killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
